THE BLUE FOLD
In 2017, Matthew and Julie Chase-Daniel were awarded a residency on Loggerhead Key by the National Parks Arts Foundation. Home to extensive protected marine habitat and healthy coral reefs, the island is remote and isolated, with no phone or internet service. Days after they arrived, the artists were evacuated due to Hurricane Irma. They fled with millions as much of south Florida came under mandatory evacuation orders. Later, they returned and remained on Loggerhead Key for several weeks, alone and uninterrupted, cleaning up palm fronds and broken glass, walking the island, getting to know the birds and crabs, making photographs, reading, and writing.

CCA Observations: Drawing from the Audubon New Mexico Collection

in the CCA Tank Garage Gallery
Audubon New Mexico will present an incredible collection of nests, eggs, feathers and taxidermy for slow looking and creative observation in CCA’s Tank Garage Gallery inspired by Matthew and Julie Chase-Daniel’s exhibition, The Blue Fold. In this still life workshop, participants will draw, paint and collage while taking a close look (with microscopes!) at a variety of specimens from Audubon New Mexico’s collection. All ability levels are welcome- this workshop will be a fun, experimental celebration of New Mexico birds.

CCA Observations: Hyper-Local Ecology with the SF Botanical Garden

on the CCA campus
Drawing from themes of ecological observation and exploration in the Blue Fold exhibit, Tallie Segel of the Santa Fe Botanical Garden will give context about observing hyper-local ecology and techniques for reading the landscape to create botanical gardens where you find them. As a group, we'll walk the CCA campus asking the question: What's happening here?, and observing and discussing the ecology of overlooked spaces while discovering the familiar on a new level. Group will collect plants and other materials and return to the gallery to take part in an ecological hands-on workshop.

Head out for a walk in nature with artists Matthew and Julie Chase-Daniel! In this intimate workshop, participants will focus on the specific ecology of Northern New Mexico, surrounding the beautiful campus of the Randall Davey Audubon Center & Sanctuary. Participants will observe, visit, and take photographic portraits of the specified plant, and take time to write short poems which engage with local plant life. The workshop will make time for observation, creation and sharing. Enjoy an afternoon seeing Santa Fe in a whole new way! BYO bag lunch, a notebook and pen, and digital camera (phone camera is fine). Please wear sturdy walking shoes and clothes appropriate to the weather.
